Making an electrolyte drink at home is super simple. A good squeeze of lemon, a pinch of turmeric, a teaspoon of honey, and a small pinch of sea salt or pink salt, stirred into spring water or coconut water.
If you'd rather make a batch to keep on hand across the week, you can combine those same ingredients into a concentrate first, without adding the water or coconut water yet. Store it in a jar, then simply add a shot of the concentrate to water, coconut water, or even a cooled herbal infusion whenever you want it.
Why each part matters
Lemon
Rich in vitamin C, which supports healing and iron absorption at a time when your body is working hard to replenish itself. It also helps the drink feel bright and refreshing, even served warm.
Turmeric
A natural anti-inflammatory. It's also warming, which fits with keeping things gentle on your system when eating and drinking cooler things in general. Our digestive fire, even in warm weather, needs to stay alight - this helps.
Honey
A natural source of quick energy and a touch of sweetness. It also helps the body absorb the sodium and water more efficiently, which is really the whole point of an electrolyte drink.
Sea salt or pink salt
This is the electrolyte itself. Sodium helps your body actually hold onto the fluid you're drinking, rather than passing it straight through.
Coconut water
Coconut water brings extra potassium along with the sodium, which is worth the swap if you have it to hand.
To gather
A good squeeze of lemon
A pinch of turmeric
1 teaspoon honey
A small pinch of sea salt or pink salt
Spring water or coconut water (or cooled herbal tea)
To do
- Combine the lemon, turmeric, honey and salt in a glass or jar.
- Add your spring water, coconut water, or cooled herbal tea, and stir well.
- For a concentrate: mix the lemon, turmeric, honey and salt together on their own first, without the water. Store in a jar, and add a shot to water, coconut water or herbal tea whenever you need a boost.
