If you grew up in the UK, chances are you’ll remember cleavers - or as I’ve always known them, “Sticky Willy.” That velcro-like plant that clung to your clothes (or your unsuspecting friend’s back) and sparked plenty of childhood laughter.
But beyond the nostalgia, cleavers are having their moment in my kitchen right now - and for good reason.
They’re absolutely everywhere this spring, thriving in gardens, hedgerows, and farmland. Instead of seeing them as a nuisance, I’ve been embracing their abundance and incorporating them into my daily routine.
In Western herbalism, spring tonics like cleavers are traditionally used to support the body as it transitions into a new season. Think gentle, nourishing support rather than anything extreme.
The benefits of Cleavers
Here are a few of the herbal highlights that make this humble plant worth paying attention to:
- Supports lymphatic drainage and may help reduce swelling
- Acts as a gentle diuretic, supporting urinary tract health
- Traditionally used to soothe skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis
- Has naturally cooling and anti-inflammatory properties
- Often used as a gentle “spring cleanse” herb
How I’m Using Cleavers Daily
One of the best things about cleavers is how versatile they are. Here are a few simple ways I’ve been enjoying them:
Cleavers Tea
Enjoyed hot or as a refreshing cold infusion. I often pair it with nettle and lemon—vitamin C from the lemon helps with iron absorption from the nettle.
Sautéed Greens
Lightly sautéed in olive oil or butter alongside other greens and served with my morning eggs. Simple, nourishing, and delicious.
Savoury Bakes
Cleavers work beautifully in hearty dishes. Recently, I made pasties with chicken, leek, wild garlic, lemon, parmesan, and cleavers - honestly incredible.
Herbal Vinegar
A staple in my kitchen. I simmer apple cider vinegar with fresh cleavers and nettle seeds, strain, and use it in dressings, drinks, or to brighten sauces.
Wild Pesto
Blended with wild garlic (also in season right now), cleavers make a vibrant, nutrient-packed pesto.
Cold Infusion
Just steep a handful of fresh cleavers in cold water, leave overnight, and enjoy the next day. It has beautifully light, fresh tasting notes - often compared to cucumber - making it incredibly easy to drink and perfect for this time of year.
Embracing Seasonal Abundance
There’s something deeply satisfying about using what’s growing right outside your door. Cleavers are a perfect reminder that nature often provides exactly what we need - right when we need it.
So instead of brushing them off your clothes this spring… maybe bring them into your kitchen instead.
Have you been eating or drinking Sticky Willy this season? I’d love to hear how you’re using it
